The King of Monsters is about to fall.
IDW Publishing has dropped a bombshell Godzilla #6, arriving January 7, 2026, will feature the death of Godzilla.
Writer Tim Seeley and artist Nikola Čižmešija are taking the iconic kaiju into uncharted territory with this major event. And to celebrate the occasion, the legendary comic book creator Dan Jurgensthe man behind The death of supermanhas created a stunning variant cover that pays homage to one of the most iconic comic book moments of all time.
Jurgens shared his enthusiasm for the project, saying:
“When the good folks at IDW asked me about the possibility of a special ‘Death of Godzilla’ cover that would take after the iconic cover Brett Breeding and I did for Superman #75, I was definitely up for it.
“I’ve always been a fan of the big guy, but I hadn’t had a chance to draw him, so this was the perfect way to scratch that itch. It was so much fun to be able to contribute!”
While IDW is keeping the details of Godzilla’s death under wraps, readers can expect all the epic destruction and emotional impact worthy of the king’s fall. But don’t expect him to stay away for long.
In February Godzilla #7, Seeley reunites with artist Hendry Prasetya for the creature’s mysterious resurrection. This time, the monster will emerge in a terrifying new form, Kai-Sei Energy Godzilla, an evolution that promises to unleash power unlike anything fans have ever seen before.
Aaron John Gregory, head of product development for Godzilla, spoke about the bold creative move:
“Allowing IDW to ‘kill’ Godzilla just six issues into the new Kai-sei Era series shows how much faith TOHO International has in both rock star writer Tim Seeley and Eisner-winning Godzilla editor Jake Williams.
“These kinds of comedic events cannot be taken lightly. In ’92, as a young teenager, I waited in a long line to buy a copy of Superman #75, and was astounded by the resulting brutality of those pages.
“I can tell you that the incredible team behind our new Kai-Sei era of Godzilla has achieved that level; with all the electrifying excitement and violent panache you’ve come to expect from this series.”
Editor Jake Williams added:
“Comics are supposed to be crazy. And personally, I can’t think of a crazier way to end arc 1 of the first ongoing Godzilla series in over a decade than killing Godzilla.
“For anyone waiting to check out this series, now is the time to dive in. We’re delivering a Godzilla unlike any other, and we’re finally delivering on our promise to showcase ‘a boy with the power of Godzilla.'”
While Godzilla’s end may only be temporary, this storyline marks a monumental moment for IDW’s monster universe. Fans can expect a dramatic and emotional send-off that sets the stage for whatever form the King of the Monsters will take.
