Jeremy Allen White disappointed fans with his role as Bruce Springsteen

Bruce Springsteen fans were expecting “Springsteen. Deliver me from oblivion” to be a big event, but it seems the expectations were higher than the outcome. The 20th Century Studios film, starring Jeremy Allen White, evokes conflicting emotions; It’s not just because the actor doesn’t look much like the iconic musician.

According to Variety, the problem is deeper than critics; on the legendary Nebraska album that inspired the film. On the poster, the film looks like a powerful biopic about a rock idol, but in reality it turns into a quiet, sometimes dull drama. In the story, Bruce Springsteen writes “Nebraska” alone at his home in New Jersey, experiences personal crises and returns to the past. Although the director tries to portray this process as an internal therapy, the story seems exaggerated and overly serious.

Critics noted that, like the album it inspired, the film suffers from the monotony and lack of liveliness that has always characterized Springsteen’s work. “Nebraska” is called a masterpiece by many, but Variety’s writers believe that this album is more of a dry art project, devoid of the main thing – rock and roll energy and the joy inherent in a musician. Film critic Owen Gleiberman writes, “The claims to perfection made for the album do not reflect what people have loved about Bruce all these years.”

The film shows in detail the musician’s complex relationship with his father, whose coldness and harshness became a source of inner pain for Bruce. According to the authors, “Nebraska” refers to this trauma as an artist’s attempt to understand himself through music. But instead of a powerful psychological drama, the viewer is faced with an almost museum-like, authenticated yet emotionless work.

Still, the film has its strengths: careful handling of period detail, White’s heartfelt performance, and rare moments of genuine sincerity. But in general, the film is more reminiscent of a good example of the genius myth than a vivid film about a person.

By the way, the actor recently received a certificate of secondary education, although he never graduated from school. Read more here.
