This week’s retro trailer is for the 1980 sci-fi horror film It arrived without warningdirected by Greydon Clark, it’s a low-budget cult classic that offers a mix of alien invasion with slasher sensibilities.
The story follows a group of unsuspecting teenagers who venture into the wilderness for a weekend, only to be hunted by an alien creature that uses small parasitic starfish-like organisms as weapons.
These creatures attach themselves to victims, draining their life force in a gruesome manner. The alien itself remains mostly in the shadows, ratcheting up the tension as characters are picked off one by one.
As the survivors struggle to escape, they encounter grizzled locals, including the characters played by Jack Palance AND Martin Landauwhich bring a paranoid touch to the film.
Palance’s role as a hardened hunter bent on destroying the alien adds a great western flavor to the otherwise disturbing atmosphere.
With its mix of sci-fi paranoia, horror violence and campy performances, It arrived without warning has carved out a place for itself as a cult favorite, influencing subsequent alien horror films like Predator with its premise of extraterrestrial creatures preying on humans in the wild.
