Did you already have a western culture before?
These movies have always been in my life. I grew up in Brussels and watched French-American westerns as a child with my French-speaking grandparents. I was too young to know they were dubbing. It was so weird to hear the same voice actor when the heroes were nothing alike! (laughs)
How did you approach the many silences in the series?
They are an important component of the West. There are many unspoken thoughts between Django and his daughter. The first conversation between them was a challenge. What could they say to each other after all this time? The scene was rewritten ten times and we rethought it during filming because it wasn’t good enough. It needed to have emotion and slap the audience without falling into the escalation of brutality or restraint. The border was thin.
