U2 has been in a retrograde mood lately. Singer Bono travels the world promoting her memoir “Surrender.” The group will release their highly anticipated “Songs Of Surrender” on Friday, a collection of 40 re-recorded and redesigned songs from the group’s repertoire.
And now the Irish band has confirmed residency in Las Vegas, which will focus on one of their most iconic albums.
The show ‘U2:UV Achtung Baby Live At The Sphere’ will celebrate the group’s darker comeback after ‘Joshua Tree’, which released ‘Achtung Baby’ in 1991 and hits like ‘One’. , “Mysterious Ways”, “The Fly” and “Better Than the Real Thing”.

The residence will take place in the brand new MSG Sphere at The Venetian. It’s a $2.2 billion place that’s been advertised as the world’s largest globe. MSG Sphere features a 160,000-square-foot immersive display plan that is billed as the world’s highest resolution LED display and will play a key role in U2’s residence.
“Las Vegas has never seen anything like it before,” Bono said of the residency. I have all kinds of interests in Las Vegas, even though it goes as far as “The Fly”.
This is, arguably, where wrapper screens come into play.
The Fly was a character played by Bono on the group’s Zoo TV tour promoting Achtung Baby. Unlike the harsh staging of previous U2 tours, Zoo TV was an elaborate multimedia event that satirized television and audience overstimulation. Staging played with the “sensory overload” of its audience, with large video screens showing visual effects, random pop culture clips, and flashing text phrases. Imagine these concepts updated in the social media era with an ultra-high-resolution, wrap-around LED display.
One thing the residency won’t have – at least in 2023 – is drummer Larry Mullen, Jr., who will get permission to have and recover from surgery. Drummer Bram van den Berg will replace him at these concerts in Las Vegas.
Bono, guitarist The Edge, and bassist Adam Clayton said in a statement, “It will take everything we have to cover the Sphere without our fellow drummer, but Larry has joined us to welcome Bram van den Berg, who is a force in his own right.
“The Sphere show has been scheduled for a long time. We don’t want to disappoint people, especially our viewers… The truth is we miss them as much as we miss them… Our audience is always the fifth member of the group. At the end of the day, U2 hasn’t played on stage since December 2019 and is back on stage. We need to go out and see the faces of our fans. And what a unique stage they are building for. We are there, in the desert… We are the right band, ACHTUNG BABY is the right album and Sphere is the right place to take your live music experience to the next level… U2’s That’s what he’s been trying to do from the very beginning, especially our satellite scenes and video installations during the ZOO TV Tour that ended 30 years ago in Tokyo this fall.”
The band’s description called Sphere “more than just a venue, this is a gallery and U2’s music will be all over the walls.”
MSG promised that the room will have many technical improvements beyond even the wrap-around screen.
“Sphere’s immersive sound delivers great sound from every seat in the room. 4D technologies will allow viewers to feel the wind on their face, the heat on their skin, and the thunder. The opening show series ‘U2 UV Achtung Baby Live At The Sphere’ offers fans an entirely new experience. will benefit from proprietary technology.”
The group’s residency in Las Vegas is scheduled to begin in September. Some even talk about a world tour in 2024…
