Whitney director Kevin Macdonald has teamed up with rebranded Banijay label Workerbee Group

Whitney Director Kevin Macdonald has signed a multi-project deal with the renamed Banijay label Workerbee Group.

Macdonald, whose previous credits include the Academy Award-winning Houston Doc A day in September And marley, will work closely with Workerbee’s new film department to jointly identify high quality unscripted projects for collaboration.

The couple previously collaborated on the hit documentary series A+E Janet Jackson Janet and the new partnership has already created an important feature document for a soon-to-be-announced streamer.

“Personally, I’m a big fan of Kevin’s approach to storytelling, and his partnerships with our lead director, Ben Hirsh, have led to our most exciting documentary projects to date,” said Rick Murray, CEO of Workerbee. “Knowing that we’re forging more high-profile films together is a great way to get our Workerbee Films division off the ground.”

Macdonald added: “I have had a rewarding time working with Rick and the Workerbee team on a variety of projects over the past few years and I look forward to formalizing our relationship and working with them on a variety of to work on new documentaries.”

The move takes place as a rebranding of Workerbee to Workerbee Group. It has now been split into two divisions – films and formats – and has assembled a new leadership team under creative director Ben Mitchell and newly promoted chief executive Michelle Chappell. Patrick Holland, executive chairman of Banijay UK, told Deadline last year that Workerbee, who has Channel 4/HBO credits among others, The bridge and Netflix’s upcoming Idris Elba-Tells human playground, will receive additional investment as a reward for good performance. The indie recently announced plans to invest in unscripted ventures and talent outside of London.
