BBC hit drama Happy Valley is attracting tourists in droves to the quiet Yorkshire town

As millions of viewers across the UK prepare to sit down on Sunday night for the grand finale – and last installment ever – of hit crime drama happy valleyA small town will have a special reason to toast the success of this wildly popular and award-winning show.

With a population of just 4,500, Hebden Bridge is a pretty West Yorkshire market town that has long been known for embracing alternative lifestyles and providing a haven for those looking to get off the beaten track.

But in recent years it has mainly become known as a filming location for many scenes filmed in crime dramas happy valleythe BAFTA-winning show written by Sally Wainwright and starring Sarah Lancashire as the intimidated but never defeated Sergeant Catherine Cawood.

The show started in 2014, but fans had to wait seven long years for the third and final series, which lived up to all hopes and expectations. British fans are now waiting with bated breath for Cawood’s final confrontation with her nemesis and father of her grandson, psychopath and fugitive Tommy Lee Royce.

In that time the show was made available to stream on Netflix and gained a whole new wave of international fans, many of whom made their way to Hebden Bridge and created a boon for the town.

A candy store owner, Les Leedham, told The times:

“We have been here for 15 years and we are really part of the city. happy valley is all customers are talking about. I haven’t heard anyone say a bad word about it. everyone loves it We like to watch it with the family. We’ve had Sarah Lancashire a couple of times… I’ve had a woman from New Zealand come in and ask me about it happy valley. The series shows how beautiful the city is.”

Another resident told the same publication that tourists who visited the places publicized by the show and stopped to shop helped the city through a quiet winter.

Originally from nearby Huddersfield, award-winning author Sally Wainwright considers Yorkshire the basis for much of her work, including the drama Last Tango in Halifaxand the period drama mr jack – the true story of lesbian landowner Anne Lister, who lived in the Shibden Hall house that Wainwright attended as a child.
