Dave Chappelle talks about opposing anti-trans comments

Dave Chappelle talks about the backlash he faced last year after making comments seen as anti-transformation. The stand-up comedian took over his midnight miracle podcast claiming that the trans community is the one calling for violence.

After Chappelle’s Minneapolis show was canceled, the venue said they wanted to create a “safe space” for everyone.

On the podcast, Chappelle said that “they wanted me to say something inflammatory” as protesters reportedly threw eggs at fans waiting to see his show at the new venue at the Varsity Theater.

“In a weird way, they wanted to incite violence against themselves for the public,” he said (via Rolling Stone ).

“The Trans [people] and their proxies always say that somehow my jokes will be the cause of imminent violence that they think my jokes are inevitable,” Chappelle said. “But I have to tell you, as rude as they were, how they protested, threw eggs at people, erected barricades, swore and shouted, [none of my fans] hit her.”

After the cancellation of his First Avenue show, he said he was “upset” and “angry” about the explanation they released for the cancellation of his show.

“I was crazy. I wasn’t mad that they canceled the show,” he said. “I was angry at the statement you released… sorry? To book me? Position I’ve taken… I’m not even mad that they object to my work Well, well, who cares? What I struggle with is the idea that I can’t say it because they don’t like it.

He continued: “They want to be feared. “If you say that, we will punish you. We come to First Avenue and screw your show and we come to Varsity Theater and screw your show.” And they just don’t do that.”
