Jeff Shuter dies: Creator of animated comics for “Invincible” and “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” turned 41

Jeff Shuter, the motion comic director and producer behind projects for Viacom and MTV, whose credits include motion comics Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Stan Lee’s time jumper and an adaptation of Invincible based on the comic book series, died Nov. 10 in Chicago after suffering a traumatic brain injury.

His family announced his death today ahead of a private memorial service this Saturday in Los Angeles.

After graduating from Northwestern University in 2003, Shuter moved to Los Angeles where he co-founded Gain Enterprises, helping him and co-founder Dan Viney develop motion comic technology at a time when smartphones were becoming ubiquitous and studios were starting to produce content to create to develop for mobile devices.

Motion comics, also known as animated comics, combine elements of print comics and animation, with individual comic panels presented with voice actors, sound effects, and sometimes additional animation.

Through Gain and his other ventures, Shuter has written, directed, produced and composed music for cartoon series for Viacom and MTV, and developed projects for Fox, Disney and Universal Pictures. His credits include Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 8 Motion Comic, Stan Lee’s sweaterand an adaptation of Invinciblebased on the comic book series by Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker.
