Lucasfilm greenlit the HUNT FOR BEN SOLO script before Disney shut everything down

Adam Driver AND Steven Soderberghthe secret Star Wars project, The Hunt for Ben Solowent further in development than we thought, only to be shut down by Disney executives just before it could get off the ground.

Earlier this week, Driver shocked fans by revealing that he was working on a Star Wars film alongside Steven Soderbergh and the writer. Scott Z. Burns.

The film that would resurrect Ben Solo after his death The Rise of Skywalkerhad the full support of Lucasfilm. But the Disney bigwigs, Bob Iger AND Alan Bergmannthey were not sold and killed him.

According to The Playlist, the project wasn’t just a random pitch. It had already received internal greenlight from Lucasfilm under the code name “Quiet Leaves”.

A complete script was finished, a crew was being assembled, and the film was entering pre-production when it was finally brought to Disney for final approval. That’s when he picked up the axe.

There was some serious creative weight behind the project. Not only was Burns on board, earning “more than any other screenwriter in Lucasfilm history,” but Disney had already purchased a detailed beat sheet from Soderbergh and his wife Jules Asner, who wrote under the pseudonym Rebecca Blunt. Everything was fine. Script. Budget. Start date.

But according to Playlist, Iger and Bergman refused, confused as to how Kylo Ren could still be alive after sacrificing himself. Apparently, they didn’t want to dive into that corner of tradition.

Adding fuel to the fire, a Bluesky account believed to belong to Soderbergh (@Bitchuation, the same handle he had previously used on Twitter) confirmed the film’s existence just days after Driver’s comments. On October 22, the account posted:

“I didn’t like lying about the existence of THE HUNT FOR BEN SOLO, but it really had to remain a secret… until now!”

He continued with this:

“Also, following the HFBS situation, I asked Kathy Kennedy if LFL had ever turned in the script of a finished film for the greenlight to Disney and had it rejected. She said no, this was the first time.”

With Driver and Soderbergh now openly discussing the project, it seems safe to say that it’s officially dead in the water. Playlist reported that both believe the film will never see the light of day and are no longer under any type of NDA. So don’t expect a secret Deadpool leak.

On a side note, Playlist also clarified the rumors that David Fincher had been trying to launch a Star Wars movie set in the middle The Last Jedi AND The Rise of Skywalker. That one didn’t make it past early talks with Lucasfilm and never came close to becoming real.

It’s pretty crazy that Disney killed this Hunt For Ben Solo project!
