EARLY, 07:22: Jeremy Clarkson is likely to stop doing shows for Prime Video when his current streak ends.
Deadline understands Clarkson, which it does The Grand Tour and Clarkson’s farm for the streamer, not signing a new contract with Amazon Studios. New seasons already in the pipeline will continue, but he likely won’t appear on any Prime Video shows after 2024.
The presenter recently came under fire for a column he wrote in the The sun Newspaper in which he wrote that he “hated” Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex. He also referred to a scene from game of thronesin which Cersei Lannister is forced to strip naked and take a walk of shame, suggesting that Markle must experience the same humiliation.
I can’t sleep at night as I lie there gritting my teeth and dreaming of the day when she has to parade naked through the streets of every city in Britain in front of crowds shouting ‘Shame!’ scans. and throw excrement at them,” he wrote.
An Amazon representative declined to comment on today’s news, saying, “We have no further comment or addition.”
When Amazon was asked after the column in December whether it could continue to work with Clarkson, there was no official response, but sources said key employees were extremely unhappy.
Sources close to Amazon told Deadline that the plan to end the partnership with Clarkson has been in the works for some time.
Today, he wrote a “mea culpa” apology on Instagram, revealing that he emailed Markle and Prince Harry to apologize profusely after the column.
“I’m really sorry,” he wrote in a lengthy post. “From the balls of my feet to the follicles on my head. It’s me, I raise my hands. It’s a mea culpa with bells ringing.”
He noted that The Sun “quickly apologised” for the article which had been pulled from the internet and that he had tried to explain it himself. “Nevertheless, demands have been made that I be released and charged with hate crimes. More than 60 MPs called for action. ITV what does Who wants to be a millionaire and Amazon, show the farm and The Grand Tourglowed
“So I wrote to everyone who worked with me that I was sorry and then on Christmas morning I emailed Harry and Meghan in California to apologize as well. I was amazed at what they said on TV, but the language I used in my column was disgraceful and I was deeply sorry.”
He claimed he rushed the article to The Sun without reasonably checking it with anyone else and that he felt “sick” after reading the article and realizing its implications. “I couldn’t believe what I read. Did I really say that? It’s terrible,” he wrote.
“I knew immediately what had happened. I thought of a scene in game of thrones, but I forgot to mention it. So it looks like I actually asked for hideous violence to rain down on Meghan’s head.
He added: “I’m just not sexist and I abhor violence against women. And yet I seemed to make the case for it.”
Variation was the first with history.
