King Charles III paid tribute to his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth, in his first Christmas message, in which he also spoke of the “selfless dedication” of British officials.
In a recorded speech from St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, Charles thanked those who supported his family following his mother’s death in September.
“Remembering the heartwarming letters, cards and messages that so many of you have sent my wife and I, I cannot thank you enough for the love and compassion you have shown to our entire family,” he said. .
“Christmas is a very poignant time for all of us who have lost loved ones. We feel their absence in every familiar season and remember them in every cherished tradition.”
“In the popular Christmas carol ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem’ we sing how ‘in your dark streets the eternal light shines’. My mother’s faith in the power of this light was an integral part of her faith in God, as was her faith in people – and I share this with all my heart. It is a belief in each person’s extraordinary ability to touch the lives of others with kindness and compassion, and to shine a light in the world around them,” he said.
“This is the essence of our community and the foundation of our society.”
Charles spoke of the “great anguish and hardship” for those struggling to “pay their bills and feed their families and keep them warm.” And he praised the rescue workers who “worked non-stop to keep us all safe”.
Charles’ message on Sunday was the first Christmas message that the Queen has not delivered since 1957.
The coronation ceremony of the new king takes place in May.
