Let’s party! The top 100 countries for good food have been announced – and Italy is number one, followed by Japan and Greece in third place.
This appears from a recent study by the Taste Atlas Awards 2023/24, which is based on 271,819 reviews of dishes and 80,863 reviews of food. “Italy and Japan recorded the same average rating,” said Smaakatlas, “but Italy took first place again this year, thanks to a higher rating for the top-rated dish: pizza.”
Portugal (fourth) and China (fifth) round out the top five, while the USA is close behind at 16th, Australia at 50th, England at 39th, Scotland at 47th and Wales at 99th.
Rounding out the top ten are Indonesia (sixth); Mexico (seventh); France (eighth); Spain (ninth) and Peru (tenth).
In a separate ranking that focuses on the world’s 100 best dishes, the crown goes to the Brazilian picanha – a piece of beef from a cow’s butt.

In second place is the Malaysian flatbread “Roti Canai” and in third place is the Thai stir fry “Phat Kophroe”, which is traditionally made with pork or chicken, Thai basil, chillies and garlic and served with jasmine rice.
In fourth place is Italy with its popular Napoletana pizza, topped with tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, basil and olive oil. In fifth place is Guotie – a kind of Chinese dumpling.
Not a single British dish is in the top 100 dishes in the world, and Australia is also conspicuous by its absence. An American dish makes the list: Boiled Maine lobster comes in at number 78.

Rounding out the top ten dishes in the world is a Thai egg noodle soup called “Khao Soi” (sixth dish); Indian “Butter Garlic Naan” (seventh); Chinese soup-filled steamed buns known as “tangbao” (eighth); Russian meat sticks or “shish kebab” (ninth) and Thai “phanaeng curry” (tenth).
Taste Atlas also lists the 100 best cheeses in the world, with the top three all coming from Italy: Parmigiano Reggiano (first); Mozzarella di Bufala Campana (second) and Stracchino di Crescenza.

“Call me average, but I don’t see any pepperoni pizza here,” “Robert” wrote.
While “Laura Tasarkan” said “Kebab should be number 1” and “Prokopis Karvounis” asked “Where’s the moussaka?”

Others celebrated countries that did well.
“Brazil wins!” wrote “Mayra Baldini” with a party hat emoji, while “Lezel De Guzman” said, “Just seeing a Filipino dish is enough!”
On the complexity of the task, “Ad Aree” added: “Although I am from Malaysia and our dish is second, I think it is almost impossible to evaluate a wide variety of foods because they taste so different,” another .
“I personally love Sarawak Laksa [a Malaysian noodle soup] more than Roti Canai and it’s not even on this list.’
