When is a Christmas tree not a Christmas tree?
Some would say it’s a pile of chrome suitcases.
One such extravagant concept has been unveiled by London’s ultra-luxury hotel Claridge’s to mark the start of the festive season.
This year’s tree on the Mayfair grounds was created by Louis Vuitton and is hailed as a “magnificent sculpture”.

The sculpture – which “oozes festive charm” – consists of fifteen vertically arranged, recycled chrome stems of varying heights that “create the silhouette of a traditional Christmas tree” and “reflect Art Deco architecture”.
Each signature bag is adorned with Claridge’s vintage travel stickers and an oversized Louis Vuitton luggage tag.
The creation is immersed in two large open “wardrobe boxes” that reach a height of 5.2 meters (17 feet).

Louis Vuitton’s first London store opened in 1885, just around the corner from Claridge’s, and since then, the hotel says, the “legendary bag” has “crossed the threshold by the thousands.”
Claridge’s General Manager Paul Jackson said: “We are delighted to unveil Claridge’s Christmas Tree 2023 from our legendary friends at Louis Vuitton.” Christmas is the most magical time for us here at the hotel and we look forward to welcoming guests and seeing visitors immerse themselves in the world of Louis Vuitton.”
Claridge’s sister hotel The Connaught, also in Mayfair, has unveiled a more traditional tree designed by influential British artist and sculptor Dame Rachel Whiteread.
It is 10 meters high and decorated with 102 round, neon white hoops.
