Joey captioned the clip, which has been viewed more than 19,000 times: “Is turbulence dangerous?”
The pilot noted that travelers kept asking him if turbulence was “so dangerous.” He then explained the three different types of turbulence.
“The three most common types of turbulence are mild, moderate and severe,” he said.
“Severe is very, very rare, but it does happen,” he said. Joey then explains the different levels using the analogy of a coffee mug.
He said if you try to drink a cup of coffee in mild turbulence, the coffee might move around in the cup, but you won’t have a problem sipping it.
In moderate turbulence the drink would become difficult to drink and the coffee would splash easily.
“And seriously, the coffee is probably all over your shirt and gone. The coffee cup is probably gone and it’s pretty intense, but you’re very safe when you’re strapped into your seat,” Joey explained.
He noted that staying in the seat with the seat belt on was key.

“The plane is so durable, strong and flexible.” It passes all these stress tests and can withstand a lot of stress and turbulence,” reassured the pilot.
“As long as you wear your seat belt, you are safe, the plane is safe.”
At the end of the leg, the pilots tried to find other routes to avoid severe turbulence, according to Joey.

One person said, “Thank you.” I really needed to hear this! I have flown a lot this year and am afraid of turbulence. I’m glad to know that, even at worst, we’ll be okay!’
Another user said: “I really like turbulence, it adds a bit of excitement.”
Someone else wrote: “I call them speed bumps in the air lol just like on the ground. “A bumpy road before it gets smooth again.”
