Spain Imposes Border Controls on Travelers From Italy

Spain will strengthen border controls at ports and airports for passengers arriving from Italy starting midnight on August 8. News agency Europa Press reported the decision, citing sources in the Spanish cabinet of ministers. The controls will remain in effect until September 7.

The checks will selectively target the identity and nationality of travelers. European Union citizens will be required to present a passport, while third-country citizens must show a visa or residence permit.

Border Control Rules

Spanish authorities explained that the measures are temporary and are being introduced in response to the current situation. Officials noted that the duration of the checks may be revised, extended, or canceled early if conditions change.

The move follows an action on July 31, when Italy unilaterally suspended the Schengen Agreement with Spain. Italian authorities cited a massive influx of migrants from Morocco as the reason for their decision.
