Sayylykka is only Russian movie to make summer profit

The Yakut musical comedy Sayylykka was the only Russian film to turn a profit at the box office over the summer, according to film critic David Shneiderov.

Speaking to the National News Service (NSN), Shneiderov stated that a total of 67 domestic movies entered cinema distribution across Russia during the three summer months. However, the critic confirmed that only one of those releases managed to cover its costs in theatrical venues.

Still from the film Sayylykka

Sayylykka was produced in Yakutia, a vast region in eastern Russia that has established a self-sustaining regional film industry known for making low-budget features for local audiences.

Audience spending and superhero popularity

While domestic releases struggled to turn a profit, Shneiderov pointed to sustained public interest in major foreign properties. He noted that over the past month alone, moviegoers in Russia spent more than seven million rubles on Spider-Man costumes.

The film critic added that during a recent screening of Spider-Man that he attended in person, the theatre auditorium was packed to capacity with viewers.

Spider-Man is a popular superhero character originally created by Marvel Comics, featuring in major international film franchises that attract large audiences worldwide.

Screening allocation and regional audience reaction

Shneiderov's assessment follows earlier statements by Alexey Voronkov, chairman of the Association of Cinema Owners (AVK). Voronkov previously linked the box office performance of the domestic production The Last Warrior: Kolobok directly to the high volume of screenings provided by cinema operators.

Addressing wider theatrical trends, Voronkov explained that despite public controversy surrounding the postponed unofficial premiere of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, regional audiences responded far more favourably to the domestic film. He stated that the level of criticism directed at the Russian picture in the regions was nowhere near as intense as it was in Moscow.

The Association of Cinema Owners is a national trade organization representing commercial movie theatre operators in Russia. Moscow is the capital and largest metropolitan market in the country.
