Dmitry Arutyunov, co-head of the outbound tourism committee at the Russian Union of Travel Industry and general director of tour operator Art-Tour, reported that the wellness resort island Joali Being has seen strong demand among Russian travelers. He said the resort serves no alcohol and provides healthy food for guests visiting to cleanse their bodies.

The Russian Union of Travel Industry is Russia's main trade organization representing tour operators and travel agencies. The Maldives, an island nation in the Indian Ocean known for its white sand beaches and luxury retreats, has long been regarded as an exclusive destination for high-earning vacationers. However, wellness tourism focused on health recovery and alcohol-free stays is expanding its appeal throughout the year.

Rising competition with Turkish resorts

The association also noted a shift among younger travelers, who are visiting the Maldives in groups to stay on budget-friendly islands while sharing expenses. In the archipelago, local inhabited islands offer guesthouses as an alternative to expensive private resort islands, allowing groups of travelers to split costs.

At the same time, competition for Russian vacationers is increasing between the Maldives and Turkey. Arutyunov noted that travelers often choose a three-star hotel in the Maldives rather than spending $300, or 24,800 rubles, a night for a four-star all-inclusive hotel in Turkey. Turkey has traditionally served as the primary overseas vacation destination for Russian tourists seeking Mediterranean beach resorts.

Maldivian four-star hotels are outperforming Turkish resorts on price, particularly during August. Arutyunov explained that while the Maldives has not become cheaper than Turkey overall, the cost difference between the two destinations in the premium holiday segment has narrowed significantly.

Russian tourist numbers in 2026

The trend comes as official travel data shows that 198,700 Russian tourists visited the Maldives since the beginning of 2026. Russian arrivals represented 14.7 percent of the total international tourist traffic received by the island nation over that period.
