Turkish hotel poisonings linked to food storage, doctor says

Intestinal infections and food storage violations may have caused recent mass poisonings among Russian tourists at Turkish resort hotels, according to physician Dilek Shengul.

Dr Shengul, a Turkish general practitioner, told news agency RIA Novosti that while these issues are likely causes, a formal medical examination is required to determine the exact origin of the outbreak.

Vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and high fever are characteristic symptoms of food poisoning, according to the doctor. She noted that health officials cannot confirm the precise cause of the illness without comprehensive medical testing.

The timeframe in which symptoms appear after eating is a key indicator during an outbreak, Shengul explained. When several hotel guests develop symptoms at the exact same time, it points toward a shared source of infection.

Shengul advised that affected guests should seek immediate medical care and document every food item eaten and every dining location visited. She added that until official lab test results are finalised, it remains impossible to definitively confirm that hotel food caused the illnesses.

Outbreaks reported at Turkish resorts

The medical advice comes after reports revealed a mass poisoning outbreak among Russian visitors at the five-star Nova Life Hotel in Turkey. That incident followed another mass poisoning involving Russian families at the Armas Green Fugla Beach hotel in Alanya.

Alanya is a prominent resort town and district situated on the Mediterranean coast of southern Turkey in Antalya Province. The region is world famous for its warm climate, extensive beaches and large all-inclusive hotel complexes that host millions of foreign tourists each year, with Russian travellers forming one of the largest visitor demographics.

Causes of resort food poisoning

Intestinal infections are gastrointestinal illnesses caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites that enter the human digestive system through contaminated food or drinking water. In hot Mediterranean summer and autumn weather, improper refrigeration or leaving cooked food at room temperature allows harmful bacteria to multiply rapidly, significantly increasing the risk of widespread foodborne illness.

The comments were reported by Russian online publication Lenta.ru following an interview conducted by state news agency RIA Novosti. When food poisoning outbreaks occur at international hotels, local health and tourism authorities typically conduct sanitary inspections of hotel kitchens and test food samples to identify contamination sources.
