Three people have died within days of each other at the annual Burning Man festival in the United States, according to news reports published by the Daily Mail.
Police officers investigating the deaths stated that they found no signs of violent injury on any of the victims. Law enforcement officials also confirmed that they do not believe the three fatal incidents are linked to one another.
The first casualty was identified as 50-year-old Sampson Tshombe. On September 3, festival attendees found Tshombe in poor physical condition on the event grounds. Responders transferred him to a temporary field hospital set up for the festival, where he stopped showing signs of life.
Two days after the first discovery, a second participant was found dead inside his accommodation. Authorities identified the deceased man as 60-year-old Craig Mann, who was found lifeless inside his trailer located on the festival site on September 5.
A third death involved a participant whose identity has not been released by public safety officials. That individual passed away while being transported from the festival site to a hospital in Reno, Nevada. Local police confirmed that an official investigation into the three deaths is underway.
Festival background and location
Burning Man is an annual weeklong event held in the Black Rock Desert of northern Nevada, located approximately 100 miles north of the city of Reno. Every summer, organizers and attendees construct Black Rock City, a temporary desert metropolis dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance.
The gathering takes place on a vast dry lake bed known as the playa. The remote desert environment exposes attendees to extreme temperature fluctuations, high winds, and heavy dust storms. Because of the harsh conditions and remote location, event organizers establish temporary medical clinics and emergency triage centers on site to treat sick or injured participants before arranging emergency transport to regional hospitals in Reno when required.
Previous incidents and security context
The fatalities occurred amidst ongoing attention surrounding safety at the massive outdoor gathering. Reports previously detailed a violent crime at the festival one year earlier, in September 2025, when a Russian citizen was killed on the grounds in an incident that marked a rare homicide at the event. Reports at the time stated that the suspect in that attack remained at large.
Local law enforcement authorities have not indicated any suspicion of foul play regarding the three recent deaths. Officers are continuing their investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding each fatality.
