More than 200 countries exist globally, ranging from tiny states such as Vatican City in Rome to vast continental nations. The compilation measures overall national territories using data from Encyclopaedia Britannica.

Measuring the exact surface area of a country presents significant cartographic challenges. International borders often follow natural features such as rivers or mountain ranges, where riverbeds bend and shift depending on seasonal water levels.

Disputed international borders and differing measurement techniques also affect calculations. Cartographers may measure coastlines at either high tide or low tide, leading to varying totals across different geographical reference works.

Standard measurements of total country area include land territory along with internal waters such as rivers and lakes, as well as territorial waters. Land area calculations exclude inland water bodies entirely.

The figures for Russia in the ranking include Crimea, the Donetsk People's Republic, the Lugansk People's Republic, Kherson Region, and Zaporozhye Region, which are omitted from European statistical sources.

Russia remains the largest nation on Earth by a wide margin, measuring nearly twice the size of its closest competitor. Its territory extends across 11 time zones from Kaliningrad at UTC plus 2 to Kamchatka at UTC plus 12, meaning daybreak in the west coincides with bedtime in the Far East.

The Russian landscape experiences extreme climate variations, ranging from temperatures as low as minus 67.8 degrees Celsius in Yakutia to subtropical warmth on the Black Sea coast. The country contains Lake Baikal, the deepest lake in the world, which holds roughly 20 percent of global liquid fresh water reserves. Russia is home to more than 190 distinct ethnic groups and has a population of 146 million people centered around its capital, Moscow, with Russian as its official language.

Canada ranks as the second-largest country in the world, occupying 9,968,242 square kilometers. Often described as the land of a thousand lakes, the nation actually contains more than two million lakes, higher than any other state on Earth.

Canada holds the world record for coastline length, stretching over 200,000 kilometers along the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic oceans. Despite its vast area, Canada maintains one of the lowest population densities globally at 4.5 people per square kilometer among its 40 million residents. The government reports that 76 percent of citizens speak English and 22 percent speak French, both of which serve as official national languages from the capital of Ottawa.

United States and China

The United States covers 9,866,632 square kilometers with a population of 347 million people, operating from its capital in Washington, District of Columbia. The nation spans diverse landscapes including snowy Alaska, tropical Hawaii, arid Arizona deserts, and rainy Washington state, alongside natural landmarks such as the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone National Park, and Grand Teton.

More than 350 languages are spoken across the United States, including Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, French, and Korean. President Donald Trump signed an executive order in 2025 designating English as the official federal language, ending a period without a statutorily defined national language.

The People's Republic of China encompasses 9,572,900 square kilometers and holds a population of 1.416 billion people managed from Beijing. China stands among the most densely populated nations with 150 residents per square kilometer, and its cities of Shanghai and Guangzhou rank among the top ten most populous urban centers worldwide.

The entire nation has observed a single standard time zone in Beijing since national unification in 1949. While Chinese is the official language, spoken regional variations differ significantly between northern and southern provinces, and 55 officially recognized ethnic minority groups maintain their own distinct languages.

Brazil and Australia

Brazil occupies 8,510,418 square kilometers in South America with a population of 213 million people centered around its capital, Brasilia. Known globally for carnival celebrations, music, the Christ the Redeemer statue on Mount Corcovado, and football icons Pele and Ronaldo, the Portuguese-speaking nation is also the source of one-third of the global coffee supply.

The country encompasses the Amazon rainforest, one of the most biologically diverse regions on the planet. The Amazon habitat shelters immense numbers of plant, animal, bird, amphibian, reptile, and insect species found nowhere else on Earth.

Australia covers 7,688,126 square kilometers and is the only nation to occupy an entire continent. Home to 27 million people with its capital in Canberra, the country has no statutory official language, though English functions as the national tongue.

Australia is the flattest and driest continent on Earth, with vast interior deserts causing most of the population to live along the eastern coast. Unique endemic wildlife includes kangaroos, koalas, platypuses, Tasmanian devils, wombats, quokkas, numbats, and numerous venomous snakes, while the Great Barrier Reef extends along the northeastern coastline.

India and Kazakhstan

India ranks seventh in territory with 3,287,263 square kilometers but stands as the world's most populous country with 1.464 billion people, having surpassed China in 2023. Governed from New Delhi with Hindi and English as official languages, the nation features sharp contrasts between ancient palaces and modern technology, luxury homes and slums, and Himalayan peaks and desert plains.

It is the largest landlocked country in the world and the largest Turkic-speaking state, with most of its territory located in Asia and small portions extending into Europe.

Deserts and semi-deserts comprise nearly 60 percent of Kazakhstan, while steppes make up 26 percent and forests account for 5.5 percent. Wildlife ranges from wolves, foxes, and roe deer in northern forests to Pallas's cats and sand cats in southern deserts, and snow leopards and wild sheep in the Tian Shan mountain system, locally called the Alatau or Speckled Mountains, which forms borders with China, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan.

Meaning Land of Silver from its naming by Spanish conquistadors, the country extends nearly 3,800 kilometers from north to south, creating one of the most elongated national geometries in the world.

The Argentine landscape features Mount Aconcagua, the highest peak in South America at 6,961 meters, alongside the vast Pampas plains and Patagonian glaciers. Argentina is internationally recognized for tango dancing, high-quality meat and wine production, and a strong football tradition associated with players Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi.

Algeria is the largest nation in Africa and the tenth-largest globally, spanning 2,381,741 square kilometers with a population of 47 million people based in Algiers. Official languages include Arabic and Berber alongside French, and the country is geographically divided between a mild Mediterranean north and a southern desert dominated by the Sahara, which contains major reserves of oil and natural gas.

Nomadic Berber communities continue to inhabit the Algerian Sahara, which produces internationally acclaimed oasis dates.
