Soprano Nadine Sierra and tenor Xabier Anduaga captivated audiences at the Sala Carlos Piantini of the National Theater in Santo Domingo during the Gala de Grandes Intérpretes "Margarita Copello de Rodríguez," a concert honoring one of Dominican classical music's key figures.
Sierra and Anduaga, both recognized for performances on some of the world's leading stages, including the Metropolitan Opera and the Teatro Real, brought their talents together on a single stage in an appearance the organizers described as an exceptional opportunity for local audiences.
The two singers were accompanied by the National Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor José Antonio Molina. Their program ranged across opera, zarzuela and musical theater, featuring works by Giuseppe Verdi, Pietro Mascagni, Charles Gounod, Gaetano Donizetti and Giacomo Puccini, along with well-known titles from Spanish zarzuela and Broadway.
Encores close the night
The audience's applause continued after the main program ended, bringing the artists back to the stage for three encores: "Júrame," "O mio babbino caro" and "O sole mio," each met with enthusiasm and sustained applause.
A benefit for the theater
The gala was organized by the Fundación Sinfonía and the Fundación Amigos del Teatro Nacional and also served a charitable purpose. Funds raised will go toward new educational programs and the continuation of existing initiatives run by both foundations, as well as toward renovating and modernizing areas of the National Theater.
The concert paid tribute to the memory of Margarita Copello de Rodríguez, a central figure in promoting classical music and cultural development in the Dominican Republic, and co-founder and honorary president of the Fundación Sinfonía. Her legacy remains tied to the advancement of music education and the strengthening of the country's cultural life.
