The fifth season of the Israeli action series Fauda will premiere on Netflix on September 8, following the release of its first official teaser trailer by the streaming network.
The new season picks up two years after the real-world events of October 7, 2023. Show creators were forced to rewrite the entire script to reflect the changed geopolitical landscape following the attacks in Israel.
Created by Lior Raz and Avi Issacharoff, Fauda is an acclaimed military drama centered on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The show is told primarily from an Israeli perspective while striving to humanise both sides of the struggle, drawing heavily on the creators' real-life service in the Israeli military. Raz served in an undercover counter-terrorism unit, while Issacharoff covered Middle Eastern affairs as a journalist.
New operation and plot details
The story focuses once again on protagonist Doron Kabilio, played by series co-creator Lior Raz. The narrative begins when an unauthorized revenge mission undertaken by an old friend in Marseille leads Doron to France.
That trip pulls Doron into a dangerous infiltration operation aimed at preventing a catastrophic attack against Israel. Along the way, the protagonist is forced to confront the severe psychological toll of his past actions.
Marseille, a major port city on the Mediterranean coast of southern France, serves as the initial setting before the action shifts back to the Middle East, expanding the show's geographical scope beyond its traditional regional focus.
Themes of trauma and blood revenge
Trauma and its lasting aftermath form the emotional core of the fifth season. Show creators explained that the upcoming episodes will portray characters who are far more profoundly affected by their experiences than in previous installments of the drama.
At the start of the new season, Doron is shown attempting to cope with post-traumatic stress disorder. Producers emphasized that war and its emotional consequences are no longer merely a background setting, but a fundamental force driving the characters' lives.
Revenge serves as another central motif for the season. Issacharoff explained that the Arabic concept of tha'r, which refers to blood revenge, summarizes much of the story they set out to tell. He noted that the series also explores what occurs after revenge is exacted and whether retaliation brings any genuine resolution.
Returning cast and new international additions
The ensemble cast for season five features several returning fan favorites alongside prominent international additions. Yaakov Zada Daniel reprises his role as Eli, while Doron Ben-David returns to play Steve.
Joining the cast for the new season are French actress Mélanie Laurent and actor Hakim Djaziri. Their addition marks an expansion of the show's international roster as the narrative moves between Europe and the Middle East.
