In a podcast interview last year, Lady Pamela reminded her how she was always “patient” and “kind” to the Queen’s mother-in-law, Princess Alice of Battenberg, who “can be very sharp and tough”.

“I remember being in Windsor and waiting for lunch,” Lady Pamela said. The aide-de-camp had come to pick her up for lunch with the queen.

He was a new squire, a young man in his twenties, and thought he should amuse Princess Alice and talk to her.

“He recklessly asked, ‘And what did you do this morning, ma’am,’ to which Princess Alice replied, ‘And what does that have to do with you?’

Lady Pamela also revealed that Princess Alice and Prince Philip live very separate lives, despite living under the same roof with her son.

“She was wearing a dressing gown in a loft of her own choosing,” said Lady Pamela. “While Prince Philip is very busy downstairs.”
