After 13 years of waiting, Avatar: The Way of the Water, the sequel to James Cameron’s Avatar, finally comes out in December. What awaits us? Will there be a sequel? The director told Total Film magazine this and much more.

With the re-release of Avatar, which grossed over $15 million in the US and over $40 million worldwide this fall, it seems like a lot of people are still interested in the Cameron series. But if the film’s first two sequels fail at the box office, Cameron is poised to make his third film a worthy ending to the franchise. The director said earlier this year that he might not direct the fourth and fifth Avatar movies if given the opportunity.
“Everything depends on the market. If the movie’s profitability ends, we’ll have to put the work on hold, even if we’re in the process of developing a third or fourth movie. Unfortunately, it is no longer up to us. ”
“The movies themselves are all-consuming,” Cameron told Empire magazine. “There are other interesting things I’ve developed. I think over time – I don’t know if after the third or fourth episode – I’ll want to turn the flag over to a director I trust to take over the franchise so I can do other things that are also interested. Or maybe not. I don’t know”.
“Hopefully we can do episodes 4 and 5 because it’s a big story after all.”
