The Crown Ratings: Netflix Royal Drama hits 1.1m UK TV viewers on day one

Netflix drama The crown attracted 1.1 million viewers in the UK this week on the launch day of season five. That’s miles behind ITV’s 7.9 million I’m a celebrity… Get me out of here! But the cumulative nature of streamer viewing means that number is relatively meaningless.

According to BARB data from Overnights.tv, The crown The first episode of season five earned more than a million when it aired at 8 a.m. Wednesday, with the second episode dropping 666,000 and the third episode down to around 300,000.

For the last episode of the Left Bank Pictures show, Overnights.tv only got 100 viewers, but again, that needs context: that’s likely to include the die-hard few who watched all ten episodes at once. Many today choose not to eat.

It should also be noted that the figure only includes television and does not take into account viewing from laptops, tablets and phones.

Netflix has rarely allowed its shows to be measured by volume, but last month agreed to allow BARB to track its content in the UK, a world first. BARB previously pursued streaming songs, but these were not intended for release and were only shared with customers.

The crown is by far the biggest launch Netflix has had since its debut on BARB on Nov. 1, but is sure to gain significant viewership in the coming days and weeks. For comparison: ITVs I’m a celebrity…If you’ve been naked all week, you probably won’t see much of an increase in viewership after the episode.

While the nightly streaming numbers can’t be directly compared to the numbers of the broadcasters’ 300 BARB tracks – including BBC One, BBC Two, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 – the closest we can come to judging how Netflix and Disney+ are also cover pending, will perform daily in the UK.

Providing some assessment data, while incomplete, is likely to help Netflix steer advertisers to its new ad-supported tier, which launched in the UK this month.
