Jenna Bush Hager is open about the dinner she had with Prince Charles the night before he became King Charles III following the Queen’s death.
Today’s host was in Ayrshire, Scotland last week and interviewed Camilla, now the Queen’s wife, about her online book club, The Reading Room.
Bush Hager, 40, was supposed to meet him Wednesday before he took a seat, but Charles took over after his British Airways flight was delayed.
“It was a great meal,” he told Hoda Kotb and Craig Melvin on Monday morning’s Today show. “First he said, ‘My dear wife is very upset. [not to make it].’ and i love [that].’

Turning to her husband, Henry Hager, who was also at dinner, Bush Hager said, “Are you going to call me ‘my dear wife’ from now on?” she asked.
Charles also told her that Camilla was “looking forward to sitting with you tomorrow.”
“We had a wonderful evening filled with cheerful conversations,” the former first daughter added.
Returning to dinner, he thinks Queen Elizabeth’s health problems are a “surprise” for the family the next morning.
Bush Hager, who has been planning to interview Camilla for about a year, explained that he and his team were also surprised by the turn of events.

Bush Hager was supposed to have dinner with Camilla on Wednesday the night before the meeting, but Charles took over after his flight was delayed.

The former eldest child said he had a “great night of conversation” and believed Queen Elizabeth’s health issues had taken the family by surprise.
“We were getting ready to meet the next morning,” he said. “We were in their house. It’s called the House of Dumfries – they really bought it, recreated it and then gave it to the Scottish people.
“The interview was supposed to start around 2:30 or 2:30 pm,” he continued. “At half past one, I was now due to meet the queen consort. At 12:30 we heard rushing up and down the aisles ».
They were preparing to shoot in the Dumfries House library when the royal family team came to talk to them.

On Thursday, Bush Hager and his crew were preparing to shoot in the Dumfries House library when the royal family came to speak to them.

He admitted he was disappointed as he couldn’t wait to talk to Camila about the books at the time, but being there in that moment and saying “It was a living story” was surreal.
Bush Hager announced on the Today program on Thursday that the interview was delayed during filming outside Dumfries House, just hours before the queen’s death was announced.
“Our hearts go out not only with their families, but with everyone who has loved this queen for decades,” he said. “As you all know, he is a beloved figure. He worked with 15 prime ministers. He was the cornerstone of perseverance not only for this country, but also for his family.”
“My heart is breaking too,” he added. “In many ways, we see her as an incredible political figure, but she’s a mother, she’s a grandmother, a great-grandmother, and now her family is at her bedside.”

Bush Hager was touched when he revealed on Thursday’s Today program that his interview with Camilla had been delayed a few hours before the queen’s death.
