Luis Medina, the golden bachelor with a life full of scandals

The complaint filed by the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, linking Luis Medina to crimes of money laundering, document fraud and serious fraud, has placed the youngest son of Nati Abascal and Rafael de Medina and Fernández de Córdoba under public scrutiny. Both he and his brother Luis, the current Duke of Feria, grew up in Seville, where they attended the private international school Alminar, which was also attended by the children of important businessmen and relevant figures of Andalusian society.

Apart from his aristocratic origin, life had prepared many surprises for him and this is not the first scandal to affect the family. For starters, their parents’ divorce, in 1988, was a major blow to the two brothers, although the mother tried to protect them at all times. At that time, Naty did not hesitate to send them to a Jesuit boarding school in Villafranca de los Barros, in Badajoz, to keep them away from the media commotion. Soon after, he began his journey through international schools outside of Spain. Luis and his brother studied in England and the United States.

The figure of his father has marked his life not only because he was his father, but also because of the serious problems he had throughout his existence. The worst was in 1993, when Rafael de Medina was convicted of crimes of kidnapping, corruption of minors and drug trafficking. That was a real scandal that took countless minutes of television and pages of newspapers and magazines. Luis was a teenager living in New York at the time and remembers that time as very tough. This has been stated more than once. His mother would not let them return to Spain to protect them, although she eventually relented and he returned to Madrid while his brother was in the United States. He then moved to Seville to be closer to his father, who would commit suicide in 2002.

Although he now has a fairly low media profile, he was one of the most sought after claims at civic parties during his youth. At 41, he is still considered the “golden bachelor” of the national scene. It is not for nothing that the French magazine Point de Vue named him the most attractive golden bachelor in the world in 2014. Although he has not yet found the woman of his life, he is not giving up trying. They say he even had a profile on one of the dating apps reserved for the rich and famous.

His first official girlfriend was the model Priscila de Gustín, whom he met through her mother, although they hadn’t been dating for a year. That was in 2002 and shortly after their breakup began what has been his longest romance to date, which he had with Alejandra Rojas, daughter of the Counts of Montarco. They had been together for almost five years, but they couldn’t.

The year 2010 was very eventful for the brother of the current Duke of Feria, who was related to Tamara Falcó (although it was never confirmed), for the actress Norma Ruíz, for the businesswoman Amanda Heartst, heir to one of the great fortunes of the United States Unidos, and with Paula Barcala, with whom he was in a relationship from December to August of the following year. Since then, there are no more official girlfriends until he started dating Alejandra Pérez-Pla in 2013, with whom he was also not very successful. A year later, Sylvie Meis, ex-wife of football player Rafael var der Vaart, and supermodel Madeleine Hjört would be next.

So we come to 2015 when his relationship was confirmed with the photographer and designer Mónica Ugalde with whom he broke up in February 2016. His last official relationship with Cristina Fotcuberta, daughter of the Duchess of Estremera and the Marquis of Bellamar, whom he was dating, dates from 2017 to October 2018. Nothing has been known about his sentimental situation since then, although he will be in 2021. was seen in an accomplice pose with Isabel Mateos, a friend of ‘little Nicolás’.

As the firstborn, it is Rafael who has inherited the family titles, but since last year Luis has been the Marquis of Villalba by transfer from his brother. A process that started in 2018 and which he himself declared to be excited, although he was very clear that it meant no real change in his life. A pragmatism inherited from his mother who, despite being the muse of many international designers, had to work hard in the fashion world to advance her children and keep them away from the recurring scandals of the father who are also arrested for Driving under the influence.

However, he did not hesitate to call himself Count of San Martín de Hoyos for many years, a title that he said was given to him in 2012 by his grandmother, the Duchess of Medinaceli. In 2015, it was his uncle, Ignacio de Medina, Duke of Segorbe, and only living son of the Duchess known as Mimi, who claimed the title. In addition to his cousin’s, the duke claimed another 17 counties, 12 marquises and four viscountries, which meant another war within the Medinaceli.

With or without honorable distinction, Luis Medina moves like a fish in water in social circles and has been doing business from an early age. Returning from the United States, he completed his studies at COU and then founded an advertising and marketing company with a friend as a partner. He also took his first steps in the real estate sector, where he was not very successful, and in fashion, becoming ambassador of Dolce & Gabana.

In 2007 he returned to the world of entrepreneurship. He set up a fashion showroom and is associated with various companies and holdings. However, it seems that his fame as an entrepreneur would not be one of the best. In fact, before this latest scandal, he was already charged with a debt with a transport company of 30,000 euros.
