“Dune” Denis Villeneuve: first of all beautiful

Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune”, the most anticipated movie of the past year, of course did not pass the “Oscar” and won the world’s main film award in six categories: “Best Cinematography”, “Best Visual Effects”, “Best Editing”, “Best Editing”. Sound”, “Best Original Soundtrack”, “Best Production Design”. It seems that the whole world was waiting for its premiere with special trepidation: Frank Herbert’s novel of the same name was shot more than once, but it was never successful. Neither David Lynch (1984) nor Alejandro Jodorowsky (whose work never came to light) failed to hit the target at the time. Therefore, Denis Villeneuve, who once gave us Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival, seems entrusted with a special responsibility: an impressive cast in the person of Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Javier Bardem and others. Meanwhile, with the content of the book, which was considered difficult for a film adaptation due to its excellent roles and budget of $165 million and the breadth of the story since its release.

In general, Denis Villeneuve has dreamed of translating the story of Paul Atreides to the big screen since he read the novel for the first time. He drew the main character riding on sandworms, he “almost took it as a guide to life”, used a quote from there as a mantra (“I must not be afraid. Fear is the mind’s killer. Fear is a small death. It destroys completely. I will face my fear”), and now “Dune” She admits it’s the hardest thing she’s ever done It’s hard, but maybe more than worthy.

“Sand Hill”

First, it’s beautiful. The sandy landscapes (seemingly just a desert) are breathtaking here, advanced technologies seem like magic, and looking at such a stellar cast is enjoyable even for two and a half hours. At the same time, Denis Villeneuve rarely goes beyond large-scale landscapes in the visual component, so impressive planet-destroying fights or explosions should not be expected. In the end, this is not an action movie, and perhaps, being a true fan of the novel itself, the director practically did not deviate from the original text, in which not the battles, but the monologues played an important and large role. And even if the dynamics suffer in some places because of this, that can be forgiven, at least to preserve the canonicality of the Dune universe, which David Lynch couldn’t do with blasters and swords. However, he was criticized for this and over and over again.

In fact, this movie is quite predictable, but so perfect in details that the modern viewer’s need for a little intrigue fades into the background. For those who have read the novel, Dune by Denis Villeneuve may seem boring, but the rest will definitely not leave the hall with a lot of unanswered questions. And in this regard, one of the leading sci-fi writers of our time maintains a fine line that would seem absurd, while not slipping into a frankly elongated and dull narrative, but also not jumping from page one to page three hundred. all volumes of the book.

And by the way, about the details. All things considered, Dune seemed destined to succeed: Denis Villeneuve as the director, John Spaites (Doctor Strange) and Eric Roth (Forrest Gump) as the writers, Greg Fraser (The Mandalorian) as the operator, and the incomparable Hans Zimmer as the composer. made the soundtrack of the film not only a background for the development of actions, but also like one of the characters.

All this attention to the shell might help writers and distract from what’s inside, but here the film hits the mark. It’s serious, deep, painful, not without one’s own beauty story about one’s own path, personal choice, growing up, loss of hope, and appearance, and that’s what it shows/sees on screen. It is also the story of Paul Atreides, who, after the betrayal of his family, is forced to flee with his mother and hide in the deserts of Arrakis (this is where the precious melange of all the houses is located). The empire of the distant future is hunting) along with the fremen, the “Dune” we see now is just getting started. And on the one hand, this leaves a feeling of inadequacy, on the other, a pleasant taste of the beginning of something grandiose.

“Sand Hill”

Meanwhile, Denis Villeneuve has released the film adaptation but not Legendary and Warner Bros. he agreed to split the movie into two parts, so it’s fair to say that this is some kind of intro, we’ll (hopefully) find a whole new world behind it, with Paul Atreides still moving away from the dart boy. Until now, not everyone even takes seriously the leader of a destructive movement that has conquered the universe.
