Ilya Repin’s famous painting “Ivan the Terrible and his son Ivan” returned to the permanent exhibition of the Tretyakov Gallery. It was damaged by one of the visitors in 2018 and the work has since been restored. This was announced by the Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation Olga Lyubimova on her Telegram channel.

The masterpiece was presented in a focal exhibition showing the stages of restoration and the history of the painting’s creation. Now the work of art is reliably protected: inside a special capsule against vandalism.
There were many attacks on the painting. The first happened during the life of Ilya Repin. In 1913, a young icon painter and Old Believer stabbed the painting three times due to mental illness. The faces of those depicted later were badly damaged, and Repin had to practically recreate them.
In 2018, a vandal broke the glass of Repin’s famous painting with a fence post and caused serious damage to the painting. He was detained at the scene.
Let us remind you that another restoration was recently completed in France. There, almost six years later, Notre Dame was restored after the fire. There were many stars at the opening of the cathedral.
