Mike Flanagan’s CLAYFACE movie will have a 2026 release date

It was announced last week Mike FlanaganThe Clayface movie has gotten the green light at DC Studios and now has a release date of September 11, 2026.

It’s a lot sooner than I expected, but it’s definitely welcome news! Flanagan (An infestation at Hill House, Midnight mass) is writing the film and is working with The Batman director Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris as producers.

The film is scheduled to begin production in 2025, which means the script is up to James Gunn’s standards and is ready! The cast has not yet been announced.

The Clayface movie release date brings it closer to date Batman 2 drop, currently scheduled for October 2, 2026.

Flanagan only wrote the film’s screenplay and will not direct it as he would be working on his own Exorcist movie. So, DC Studios is also looking for a director.

Flanagan previously said he would be “really excited to do a stand-alone Clayface horror/thriller/tragedy movie.” He later shared that he actually pitched that film to Warner Bros., saying, “They didn’t sign on to that. Although I’m ready to leave at any time.”

In another interview, Flanagan talked about his initial meeting with the studio about Clayface being a horror movie, and that wasn’t the only DC movie they talked about. He said:

“I went to Warner Bros. to have the DC meeting. It was a general meeting with [producer] Jon Berg talking about if there was something in the DC Universe that I could be good for… I really want it[ed] to do Clayface.

“I came in and said, ‘You know, if you want to do some horror-oriented DC stuff, guys, I’ve got a great take on Clayface. I’d love to do that movie.’”

“And then if not, I wanted to talk about Scarecrow and Justice League Dark and Constantine. And I kind of threw it all out there and then said, “As a kid, I dressed up as Superman, because that was my hero – Christopher Reeve’s Superman was my hero.” And the meeting went nowhere. [Berg] I didn’t really get the hang of any of that stuff.

In the comics, Clayface’s real name is Basil Karlo, an actor who, after discovering that a remake of one of his classic horror films was being made, went mad and began killing the cast and crew, wearing the mask of movie villain Clayface, until he was stopped. of Batman.

Initially having no superpowers, Karlo joined a group of other “Clayfaces” and stole their combined powers, allowing him to transform into any form he desired.

In Batman: The Animated Seriesmy favorite version of Clayface, was called Matt Hagen, an actor who worked for Imperial Pictures, once called “The Man of Millions of Faces”, but was disfigured in a terrible car accident.

While convalescing in a burn clinic, he was approached by corrupt industrialist Roland Daggett, who made him a test subject for a compound called “Renuyu” which he claimed would immediately restore his youthful good looks.

In payment, Hagen illegally impersonated people for Daggett. Hagen greatly resented this, but was forced to comply, as the chemical Renuyu was extremely addictive and Daggett was the sole producer.

It will be interesting to see what Flanagan’s interpretation of the character will be in the DCU.
