Keanu Reeves is synonymous with the name John Wick, as he is the title character and face of the franchise. He has starred in each of the blockbuster action films so far, but is ready to step away for more practical reasons.
Reeves turned 60 this year and now says the physical toll of the action series is too much for him. In a new interview on CBS This Morning (via CB) Reeves has said he’d like to play John Wick again, but his knees are holding him back.
“You can never say never, but my knees right now are saying, ‘You can’t do another one John Wick.’ So, my heart does it, but I don’t know if my knees can do it,” Reeves said.
He was on the talk show with Jeff Fowler, director of Sonic the Hedgehog 3to promote the film’s premiere next Friday. Fowler joked that Reeves’ knees left him with no excuse to sit down afterward Sonic movie, since he is only required for voice-over work to play Shadow the Hedgehog. He said: “You heard it here first: Keanu will play Shadow for the next 20 years.”
John Wick: Chapter 5 has been in the works since at least 2020 and was originally planned to be shot back-to-back Chapter 4. Following the COVID-19 pandemic and the Hollywood worker strikes of 2023, the film appears to have undergone some major changes.
Last October, director Chad Stahelski told The Hollywood Reporter Chapter 5 it would launch a new plot rather than follow it Chapter 4 directly. He also indicated that Reeves would receive creative input on the story. We’ll see what the future holds and whether fans are still okay with the John Wick franchise without Reeves’ involvement.
