Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod said 32 thousand children auditioned for the main roles in the Harry Potter series. And now the casting team reviews 500 to 1,000 entries a day. Final casting has not yet been made, but it is known that the next step will be a “workshop with some of the shortlisted candidates” in January.

Gardiner and Mylod also stated that they will stick to the characters’ canonical ages: Severus Snape will be over 30, while James and Lily Potter will be younger, as they were only 21 when they died. The adult characters will look to continue the tradition of “brilliant British stage actors”, while the younger characters will be newcomers.

Gardiner said he’s looking forward to “really digging into the characters” and learning more about Hogwarts, including the lives of its staff. Mylod added that their intention was not to “underline what has been done so cleverly” in the films, but to build on it. Regarding the set, he said he was looking forward to expanding on the architecture of Hogwarts and showing how it might have changed over time.

Let us also remind you that the Harry Potter series was officially ordered by Max Studio in April 2023. It will feature a new cast from popular movies. Casting began for the roles of Harry, Ron and Hermione in the series in September.

We previously wrote that HBO was considering Paapa Essiedu for the role of Severus Snape. Read about it here.
