Tom Hanks, 68, believes superhero cinema is having trouble right now because audiences want good stories with clear meanings. The actor shared his opinion on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

The Hollywood star noted that recently, people have started to give up comic book adaptations full of special effects and turn to real stories. “Remember when they tried to make a TV version of Captain America and Spider-Man in the 70s and 80s? Even Batman, played by Adam West. But at the time there was no technology that would allow us to do what was in the comics. And now it is. You can do whatever you want,” said Tom Hanks.
We now enjoy the luxury of abundance, and now that anything can happen on screen, “‘Okay, we trust our eyes, but what’s the story?’ “We’re coming back to the concept,” he says. Hanks said he thought audiences watched superhero movies to see the best version of themselves in the characters, but that idea has become obsolete.
“God, sometimes I feel like a mutant from X-Men. I’m as confused as Spider-Man. I’m as dark as Batman. We have already passed this stage. We’ve had 20 years to explore all of this, but now we’re at a point of development where the question arises: What is the subject? What is theme? What is the meaning of this movie?” The artist shared his thoughts.

It’s worth noting that the box office for superhero movies hasn’t had the best of times in recent years. In 2023, the films Shazam: Wrath of the Gods, The Flash, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantomania and Captain Marvel 2 failed at the box office. Movies like Madame Web and Joker 2 flopped this year. “Venom 3” was released with the lowest performance of the entire trilogy. But there are still movies that bring big box office. Marvel’s Deadpool and Wolverine became the second highest-grossing film of 2024 and the highest-grossing R-rated film in history ($1.3bn – R126.8bn – Note ed.).
Tom Hanks is confident that audiences will no longer be surprised by VFX: “They often say in the industry that if it works, it will work again. However, the audience is a little ahead. They see something familiar and say: “I’ve seen this before. What’s next? A striking picture is not enough. What is the gist of the story? Tell me. It seems like we discover something new every year.
