What did Jedi Master Yoda look like in the first Star Wars scripts?

Did you know that Jedi Master Yoda, one of the most recognizable characters in the Star Wars cinematic universe, was originally intended to be a completely different color? According to The Guardian, according to archive documents and the statements of the artists who worked on the film, the character may be blue or even purple.

In the original script for The Empire Strikes Back, Master Yoda is described as a “strange, wrinkled, bluish creature.” The writers of the initial concept art and the novelization of the film adhered to the same color scheme. In the comics, Yoda actually looks like an elf. She is depicted as purple in color, with long white hair, and of a more petite build.

The decision to make Yoda green was made after most of the visual work was completed. According to makeup artist Nick Maley, the final choice in favor of green was made in the summer of 1979.

“We sat around for five months until the producers decided what Yoda would look like, and then we were left with just seven weeks to create the world’s first animatronic superstar,” Nick Maley said.

Meili explained that the team followed the image of a stereotypical alien, which is why the color green was chosen for the iconic character. Additionally, it was technically useful; green dye was added directly to the latex, reducing the number of subsequent dyeing steps.

Meanwhile, Star Wars: Starfighter, the tenth movie in the Star Wars series starring Ryan Gosling, is currently being filmed. Read more here.
