FLORA GILL reveals what it’s like to embrace the hair color of the year: red

It was a TikTok filter that finally got me to do this. For years I thought about going red, but only when I practically “tried” and saw that my blonde locks were turning into a deep rust, I decided to take action.

I know filters can be tricky, but TikTok wasn’t the only attraction for fitness. Until I got more blonde, the first strands of hair I grew as a kid were orange (I’m partly Scottish) and my beautician notices that every time I wax, my hair behaves like a redhead (read: thick, stubborn and VERY painful). to pick up). Also, I have the right skin tone for me, so I’ve found that I can use Tipp-Ex as a concealer.

But I cannot claim that my decision is a tribute to my legacy; red really is the hue of 2022. Kendall Jenner dressed in copper for Paris Fashion Week in March this year. Originally intended only for the Prada show, they decided to keep the look a little longer. Other models and actresses such as Gigi Hadid and Zendaya have fallen into the shadows lately. Then, last month, the Wall Street Journal asked, “Why are there so many redheads all of a sudden?” she asked.

I’m obsessed with do-it-yourself videos and I’m never afraid to try do-it-yourself beauties. However, going red was something I felt should be left to the professionals. I trusted the very talented hands of Jason Hogan of Josh Wood Color. A favorite colorist of citizens and celebrities alike, Jason was recently behind Bridgerton and Derry Girls star Nicola Coughlan’s stunning Met Gala appearance.

When I chose a shade, I hoped Jason would really do the heavy lifting. I’m not good at making choices, there are too many and I’m paralyzed with indecision. I don’t want to look at a long menu at a restaurant, flavors at an ice cream parlor, or attire in a store; I want someone with experience to give me the best.

It didn’t disappoint: he didn’t even use the words “orange”, “ginger” or “red” once. Instead, we discussed the copper-gold undertones on my roots and the touch of pink that would bring out the youthful pink of my cheeks.

For starters, Jason added highlights to my hair, worked with what I already had, and added more to frame my face. After half-covering my head with foil to fix the highlights, she took them off to add color to all of my hair. Then Jason suggested I do my eyebrows to bring a sense of harmony to my face and ‘open’ my eyes.

Eyebrow revisions should be handled with extreme care. There’s a fine line between a facial fit and a total disaster. However, I trusted Jason so unconditionally that if he suggested that I drop my pants and let him dye my auburn bikini, I would agree. Finally, she applied a gloss treatment to bring out brighter tones and add shine. It’s finally time for the new me.

It’s hard to talk about the results without looking arrogant, but God, I look great. My friend should be seriously worried now that I’m out of his league. The confidence boost that a new look can give you is impressive.

The biggest change was when my eyes, which were previously blue-gray, suddenly turned a piercing blue. The other difference is that with my pale skin I now look like heaven instead of being sick.

YOUR RED OPEN

Expert colorist Jason Hogan says the secret is to evaluate your skin tone.

  • It is suitable for light auburn tones from light tan, strawberry blonde and golden apricot to light brown.
  • For medium complexions, consider deeper, richer, warmer buttery caramel and more intense copper and cinnamon golds.
  • For a dark complexion, warm red, rich caramel and maple look beautiful.

With all of the above, your tan should be adjusted according to whether your skin has a cool or warm undertone (if your veins are blue/purple, your skin is cool, if green, your skin is warm).

Jason was right about my eyebrows. It’s the perfect color accent on my face but it also means I need some new makeup. Luckily, make-up artist Alice Theobald is on speed dial. She recommends Benefit’s warm auburn brow pencil and hints of reddish earth tones in the eye palette, or a splash of green or purple on the eyes and berry red on the lips if I want to impress.

I decided not to tell my friends about my transformation and to stop posting on social media to see their reactions for themselves. They’re in such a shock that I feel like they came to lunch with a big pregnant belly that I’ve been hiding for months. However, a close friend of mine doesn’t notice it at all and is so sure I’m always red that we argue about it. Perhaps this is a sign of a good hair job – it seems you were born that way.

I’ve always thought that being blonde makes an average-looking woman more attractive, especially to men. But there’s something magical about being a redhead. Now that I did, I can’t believe it took this long. I’ve been put off by other people, especially reds. One of them told me that one can always tell it’s not real red. (He’s totally wrong because the “naturals” he’s talking about—Christina Hendricks, Sophie Turner, and Amy Adams—are actually all natural blondes.) Now I wonder if my redhead friends didn’t warn me about the color, but actually kept it a closely guarded secret.

Ugly red-dyed hair fades quickly and needs constant care to stay alive, but I’d happily sell my soul to keep it up. Now that I’ve let go of the fiery red inside me, there’s no turning back.
