It worries me that I can’t remember whether my kids tried to prank their parents on April 1 last year or in 2020. What worries me the most is that they didn’t even dare to know how tense our nerves were. after two periods of inhibition and homeschooling.
Now I wonder, what would my reaction be if I woke up on April 1, 2021 to hear that a meteorite has landed on Earth, pterodactyls are coming our way, or another ice age is approaching us? Presumably, it’s a tired acceptance and another quiet scream for Joe Wicks before they’re reunited in front of the TV.
But I don’t mind if they make fun of me from sunrise to sunset this Friday.
I was a fan of April 1 as a kid and now I realize that my family has been working on it with great patience.

British author Patricia Nicol has curated the best April Fools books, including Glen David Gold’s Carter Beats The Devil (left) and Sarah Waters’ historical novel Fingersmith (right).
There are many tricks played out in the narrative. Sarah Waters’ historical novel Fingersmith is an incredibly talented tale of bluffing and double bluffing. Sue, a London boy, is sent to work as Maud’s maid, believing her secret mission to persuade the heir to marry an adventurer. But street sage Sue is played.
Carter Defeats the Devil, by Glen David Gold, is a novel about deception. A highly fictionalized story about the life of Charles Joseph Carter, one of the most famous stage magicians of the 1920s. Here, he performs an apparently death-defying act: he invites the President of the United States to the stage, is then dismembered and fed to a lion, but reappears as a whole. But if the president dies within hours, questions inevitably arise.
The happiest pranksters in literature are twins Fred and George Weasley, who are probably the older brother of Harry Potter’s best friend Ron. Their noblest squeak comes in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, when they create a swamp in the hallway so that Harry can sneak out and see his godfather, Sirius Black. Before being expelled from school, they leave Hogwarts with a spectacular firework.
I hope April Fool’s Friday is full of trouble and joy. We all deserve a smile.
