Ilya Muromets confirms: what to do, watch and try in one of the oldest cities in Russia

The May holidays are underway and the holiday season is at hand, so it’s time to make your plans and choose a route for your long-awaited travels. We’ve already mentioned where to go on a weekend in Russia on any budget, but we recently discovered another place on our must-visit list that deserves special attention. And this is Murom – the birthplace of the most famous hero Ilya Muromets, Russian merchants and delicious rolls.

Not so long ago, Murom was secretly included in the “Golden Ring” of Russia – a tourist route passing through the oldest cities of our country, which preserves the historical and cultural heritage. Murom is becoming an increasingly popular destination for Russian travelers every year. Perhaps there you can fully feel the Russian spirit, feel its atmosphere and touch the history.

We tell you what to see, where to go and where to stay in the ancient city of Russia. And only four hours from Moscow.

What to see in Murom?

First of all, Murom is famous for its monasteries. Pilgrims from all over Russia come here to see the oldest holy monasteries. And the most important of them, without exaggeration, can be called the Convent of the Holy Trinity, located in the very center of the city. It was built in the 17th century in the style of Russian patterns. And today it is considered a center of attraction for couples. And there is an explanation for this, because at the end of the 20th century, the relics of Saints Peter and Fevronia, the guardians of love and the hearth, were transported there.

The true love story of Peter and Fevronia will not leave anyone indifferent: they tried to separate them, they were expelled from the city, but together they overcame all obstacles and died within an hour. The day of their death, July 8, is celebrated in Russia every year as a holiday of family, love and fidelity. It is then that many newlyweds go to seek blessings from St. Peter and Fevronia in Murom, so we advise you to choose other dates for your trip. On weekdays, the monastery is quite crowded and quiet, and after visiting the Trinity Church, where the remains are buried, you can wander around the area and enjoy the quiet.

And speaking of silence. No matter how it sounds, but after Moscow, and possibly any other big city, Murom literally envelops you with its tranquility and moderation. Walking through the city center was a kind of mediation: locals seem in no hurry to go anywhere and seize every minute of this life. The main Moskovskaya street reflects the history of Murom merchants and leads directly to the embankment, where a beautiful view of the Oka River opens. Here it is – real Russian nature, as if from the paintings of Savrasov and Levitan.

Where to stay?

Last year, a four-star hotel with the name “Murom” was opened on the central street of the city in Murom and has already managed to win the hearts of not only tourists, but also locals. Even after the renovation, the building has preserved its history. Earlier, II. In Catherine’s time, all the houses on Moskovskaya Street were of the same type: liquor stores and shops were located on the first floor, and wealthy merchants and bourgeois settled on the second floor. Today anyone can stay at the Murom Hotel.

Murom Hotel

The first floor of the hotel can be considered a full-fledged urban space with one room living room, where any resident of the city can work or relax in a cozy atmosphere, drink fresh coffee and have a family dinner (by this one). way, in the Morning Evening cafe, but later). Still, Murom is a fairly small city, so such places are particularly valued. The next three floors are filled with rooms offered in three categories: standard, premium and suite.

It’s hard to please the skeptical residents of the capital, but Moore could do it. First of all, I just wanted to relax after the road and the hotel had everything and even more for that. First, it’s beautiful there. The design studio was Viva Design, and they managed to create the perfect interiors for photos taken from the hotel for social networks. A stylish bathroom and branded waffle bathrobes are a must. Secondly, the place is really cozy and cozy, almost like at home. Believe me, in Murom you will exceed your norm of 10,000 steps and dream of a comfortable bed between excursions and walks. With an orthopedic mattress and soft pillows, of course. Caring cosmetics in the rooms deserve special attention. In “Murom” there are not only disposable mini jars, but also full-fledged products of the brand LIA LAB from Krasnaya Polyana in Sochi, with the smell of the same restaurants in Patricky.

Address: St. Moscow, 43, Murom

Cost of living: 4 thousand rubles per day

Where to eat?

Cafe “Morning Evening”

“A good day starts with a good breakfast” – that was the motto of our weekend in Murom. Not far from the hotel, in the same building, there is a cozy city cafe “UtroVecher”. A favorite place for locals and visitors to the city, and now our personal favourite. And a few extra pounds brought from Murom proved impossible to stop. In the morning cafe, we met tourists and reckless freelancers enjoying morning coffee on their laptops. In the evenings, the place brims with locals for family dinners, romantic dates and friendly gatherings.

Well, about the food itself. The menu includes European cuisine, author’s desserts, homemade fresh bread, fine coffees, a wine list from Simple Wine and cocktails from Moscow’s famous chef Vasily Zheglov.

In the meantime, if you want to fully experience and taste the traditions of the city, we recommend that you buy Murom kalachi, which is sold at the stalls in monasteries. Even cook for yourself at the Khlebnaya Gornitsa Museum. Local bakers forgive us, but homemade kalachi turned out to be even tastier. Especially in combination with the famous Murom kvass.

How to get there?

There are several ways to reach Murom: train, car and bus. We chose the most romantic and atmospheric, namely four hours in a compartment car and we are there. And the most convenient: trains from Moscow go to Murom every day.

The road to Murom by car will take about 5 hours. There is also a less popular option to go from the capital to the city by bus, but it takes a little longer – 6 hours and 10 minutes. We warn only those who prefer planes or live far from Murom: there is no airport in the city. But there is the nearest place in Nizhny Novgorod, where you can easily reach your destination by taxi or bus. In general, there are quite a few ways to get to Murom from any corner of Russia. So buy a ticket, book a hotel and embark on a trip you will never forget.
