Elijah Wood Talks Returning Creative Team for LORD OF THE RINGS: THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM

Elijah Wood is stirring up excitement in Middle-earth once again. During his appearance at DesertCon in Mexico, The Lord of the Rings The star has released some interesting details about the upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollumsuggesting that more familiar faces from the original trilogy may return.

The actor, best known for playing Frodo Baggins, expressed his excitement over the creative reunion of the project, saying:

“It’s really about getting the creative team back together, with the brain trust behind it The Lord of the RingsFran, Peter, Philippa, they are heavily involved.”

Wood went on to say that the film will bring back much of the original production team that helped shape the beloved trilogy.

“The same production designers” will return, he said, adding that the film “will be shot in New Zealand” and will feature “so many people who are part of the Lord of the Rings.”

Directed by Andy Serkiswho will also reprise his iconic role as Gollum from which the film draws inspiration JRR Tolkienand focuses on Gandalf’s search for Gollum after discovering that he may have revealed secrets about the One Ring to Sauron.

Production will begin in early 2026 in New Zealand, with Warner Bros. now targeting a December 2027 release. Along with Serkis, both Sir Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood will return as Gandalf and Frodo, respectively.

Wood’s comments have fueled growing speculation that even more Fellowship members could appear. Given the story’s timeline, characters like Aragorn and Arwen play key roles in Tolkien lore, making fans wonder if Viggo Mortensen AND Liv Tyler he might even come back.

In the appendices, Aragorn actually helps Gandalf track down Gollum, so it seems like Mortensen could very well end up getting involved if the creative team sticks to that storyline.

In the meantime, Orlando Bloom addressed rumors of his return during an interview on the Today Show, saying, “I haven’t heard anything, actually. I don’t know. I know it’s going to focus on Gollum, so anything is possible.”

He continued: “I wouldn’t want to see anyone else play Legolas, you know what I mean? What are they going to do? Are they going to put someone else in Legolas’ shoes?”

Bloom’s comments leave the door open, and given his history in all six Middle-earth films, fans would no doubt welcome his return.

With Serkis leading the charge both behind and in front of the camera, The Hunt for Gollum he’s trying to capture the magic he created The Lord of the Rings such an important cinematic achievement.

The promise of once again seeing Middle-earth through the lens of Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and the creative team of Philippa Boyens makes this one of the most anticipated fantasy films in development.
