The second longest reigning monarch in Swedish history, the monarchy ascended the throne in 1973 when he succeeded his late father, Gustavo VI Adolfo.

After meeting him while hosting the 1972 Olympics, he married German-born Silvia Sommerlath, now 75, in 1976.

A law was passed in 1980 eliminating male preference in the line of succession.

This means that he is the apparent heir to Crown Princess Victoria, replacing her older brother Carl Philip.

She is expected to be Sweden’s first female ruler from the 18th century.
