The Banshees Of Inisherin and Aftersun lead the London Film Critics Circle nominations

Tragedy-comedy by Martin McDonagh The Banshees by Inisherin leads this year’s London Film Critics Circle nominations with nine, followed by Charlotte Wells’ acclaimed debut After sunwhich received eight nominations.

Both films were nominated for Film of the Year, British-Irish Film of the Year, Director of the Year and Writer of the Year. The two films also received several acting nominations, with Paul Mescal nominated for his role in Best Actor After sun. Frankie Corio, who plays his daughter in the picture, is nominated for Young British/Irish Artist. Banshees Stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson are nominated for best actor and best supporting actor respectively.

Elsewhere, Todd Field’s high-art drama tar and Everything, everywhere, all at once by The Daniels both garnered six nominations. The Best Foreign Language category includes five pictures, including the Irish language drama The quiet girl and Alice Diop’s debut novel Holy Omer.

“As always, our nominees stand out because our members actually see all the films released each year,” said Rich Cline, president of the Critics’ Circle Film Division. “These nominations therefore represent a cross-section of the very best films we have seen in 2022. And it’s great that every year we can highlight films, filmmakers and performances that deserve attention.”

This year’s winners in all categories will be announced at a ceremony at London’s Mayfair Hotel on 5 February 2023. This year’s ceremony is the Critics Group’s first in-person event since the pandemic.
