Released from the Russian penal colony on December 8, 2022, basketball player Brittney Griner was finally able to reach out to her loved ones and spoke for the first time since her return to the United States through an Instagram post:
“These last ten months have been a constant battle. I have searched deep within myself to keep the faith and it has been the love of so many of you that has kept me going. »

The champion posted this Friday, December 16, a photo of her getting off the plane and embracing Cherelle Griner, her wife, from whom she has been separated since last February. Since her return to American soil on December 9, and before returning to her family, the basketball player has benefited from a United States Army device, PISA for “post-isolation support activities”in order to provide medical and psychological support for the return to normal life of persons detained or held hostage.
She spent several days at Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas being examined before joining her family late last week.
Brittney Griner, engaged in the release of other prisoners abroad
The release of Brittney Griner was the culmination of negotiations for a prisoner exchange. It was then the arms dealer Viktor Bout who reached Russian soil. Brittney Griner has already let it be known her situation obliges her to work for the release of more American prisonerssuch as Paul Whelan, a former marine arrested in Russia in 2018 and sentenced to 16 years in prison for espionage.
And it’s obviously because Brittney Griner can’t wait to get back. The champion made no secret of her ambition to find her Phoenix Mercury team as soon as possible to play WNBA games.
