Universal/DreamWorks Animations Puss in Boots: The Last Wish secured a Chinese release date for December 23rd, two days after the North American bow. Except for Avatar: the way of waterappears to be the only other Hollywood title currently dated to the end of the year in the PRC.
After a series of previews, the animated sequel began its international theatrical run this weekend, earning $8.9 million in 24 markets, including France and Italy. Domestic is dated December 21, while other major overseas markets such as Spain, Germany, Mexico, Australia, Korea and Brazil are on deck over the Christmas and New Year holidays.
The original 2011 spin-off grossed US$555 million (unadjusted) worldwide. It was not released in China. While the market has been under pressure this year, Universal titles have seen fairly steady growth, including Jurassic world domination, Minions: The Rise of Gru and The Bad Boys.
Salma Hayek Pinault takes on the role of Kitty Softpaws in a reteam with Antonio Banderas, who plays the titular cat. Harvey Guillen (What we do in the shadows) makes his franchise debut as the canine companion of Perro, Kitty and Puss.
Also part of the ensemble are Florence Pugh, Olivia Colman, Wagner Moura, Ray Winstone, John Mulaney, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Anthony Mendez and Samson Kayo.
