Russian tennis players will not be allowed to participate in the Wimbledon tournament
The organizers of the Wimbledon tournament decided to exclude Daniil Medvedev and other Russian tennis players from the competition due to the situation in Ukraine. This was reported by Sportico citing a source.
The organizers have previously considered the option of allowing Russian tennis players to enter the tournament only on the condition that they speak publicly against the Russian military special operation in Ukraine. At the same time, British Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston said he would support the government’s decision to strictly not allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to participate in tournaments.
Tennis players Daniil Medvedev, Andrei Rublev, Karen Khachanov, Aslan Karatsev, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Daria Kasatkina, Veronika Kudermetova, Lyudmila Samsonova and Ekaterina Alexandrova will have to miss the tournament.
Wimbledon 2022 will take place from 27 June to 10 July in the United Kingdom.
Currently, Russian athletes can compete in WTA and ATP tournaments, but in a neutral state: without the national flag and anthem.
