Every year, Transgender Day of Remembrance or TDoR commemorates the memory of deceased trans people.
Trans communities around the world come together on November 20 to honor those who have been victims of transphobic hate crimes. the TDoR was born in 1998, in the United States, after the assassination of Rita Hester, a black woman and figure in the Boston trans community.
Another deadly year
Trans Murder Monitoring estimated that 327 trans people died between October 1, 2021 and September 30, 2022. A symbolic number of the persistence of transphobic violence but also necessarily far from reality, reminds TMM since the reports and the collection of information also depend on the presence of structured associations in each country, which is not always true. “Most cases continue to go unreported and, when they are, receive very little attention. »
As in previous years, these are in Latin America and the Caribbean that the death toll is the highest: at least 222 trans people have been killed in the last 12 months.
“The data continues to point to a disturbing global trend when it comes to the intersections of misogyny, racism, xenophobia and putophobia, with the majority of victims Black and migrant trans women and trans sex workers. »

Two trans people have been identified in France: Beatriz Souza, drugged and killed by her ex-partner in February 2022 and an unknown person, stabbed in Paris after an argument with another trans person, in August 2022 .
About thirty rallies will take place in France (the complete list can be found on the Instagram account of the Trans Solidarity Organization). The TDoR is also dedicated to people’s memory victims of transphobia in our society. The suicide rate in the trans community is much higher than that of the general population, especially among young people.
In Paris, the meeting will be held at the town hall of the 20th arrondissement, this Sunday November 20 at 5pm on the initiative of the Acceptess T association.
