Researchers from Curtin University in Australia have uncovered how a song must be in order to be popular. Described by Naked Science with reference to a study published in Psychology of Music.

To do this, they had to analyze 271 listing tracks in the UK between 1999 and 2014. They were interested in how quickly our brain processes compositional text.
Research shows that the easier a song’s lyrics are to be perceived, the higher it ranks on the charts, but this factor does not yet say how popular the song will be. It turns out that simple songs leave the charts as soon as they climb to the top (researchers suggest that very simple lyrics quickly bore the listener).
And, according to scientists, the next factor that at least guarantees the probability of the piece “shooting” is consonant rhymes.
