Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) was expected to win re-election over Adam Laxalt in the Nevada US Senate race and secure Democratic control of the Senate.
The final ballots were enough for the networks to declare the race for Cortez Masto, who remained behind until the final mail-in ballots were tallied in more populous counties like Clark and Washoe.
Together with Sen. Mark Kelly’s (D-AZ) re-election in the Arizona Senate race, Cortez Masto’s razor-thin victory gives Democrats a sense of relief and reassurance that they will have at least 50 seats. Had they lost the race, it would have meant that the Dec. 6 Georgia runoff between Senator Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and Republican Herschel Walker would have determined who controlled the space. If the Democrats lose that seat now, they will still have 50-50 control of the Senate, as Vice President Kamala Harris will break a tie.
Like Kelly’s race, Cortez Masto’s re-election bid has been targeted by Republicans as a big opportunity this cycle. But it was clear Tuesday that the GOP’s hopes for a “red wave” had been dashed as Democrats held their own to defend House seats and win the most-watched contest of the cycle as John Fetterman defeated Republican Mehmet Oz won.
Republicans still have a good chance to gain control of the House of Representatives, but it will be a very slim majority as the races in California and other states are too early or too close.
