Not surprisingly, Donald Trump lashed out at “fake news” and “enemy of the people”! in a series of post-midterm, midnight and early morning posts, but his responses varied somewhat as they came as some in Rupert Murdoch’s media blamed him for the disappointing Republican results.
“Trump is the Republican Party’s biggest loser,” said the Wall Street Journal’s chief. “What will the Democrats do if Donald Trump is not around to lose an election?” read the editorial.
The New York Post called Trump a “Trumpty Dumpty.” The caption read: “Don (who couldn’t build a wall) had a big fall – can all the men of the GOP bring the party back together?”

There was a lot of coverage on Fox News of Ron DeSantis’ lopsided victory in Florida, which further irked Trump, who had already lashed out at his potential rival for the 2024 GOP nomination.
Laura Ingraham mentioned DeSantis’ victory on her Wednesday primetime show, calling the winning strategy the future of the GOP. She said the GOP in 2024 should be focused on winning and “not just making a point or settling a score.” She also said that if voters “come to the conclusion that you value your own ego or your own resentment over what is good for the country, they will look elsewhere.” She didn’t specifically name Trump as that person, but the point was pretty clear.
On his social media platform Truth Social, Trump, as he has done before, encouraged another media outlet to vote for Trump. He wrote: “Even though I have picked so many winners, I have to put up with the fake news. For me, Fox News was always gone, even in 2015-16 when I started my ‘journey’, but now they really are gone. Such a chance for another media company to make an absolute fortune and do good for America. Let’s see what happens?
Trump reportedly looked forward to announcing a 2024 presidential campaign next week, but some of his own former advisers have suggested delaying it until the Georgia runoff where one of his eligible candidates, Herschel Walker, is running against Sen. Raphael Warnock (DGA) faced.
While Trump touted the number of victories his endorsed candidates won, many of them were in solidly red districts. Perhaps the biggest sting was Mehmet Oz, who lost to Democrat John Fetterman in the most expensive and high-profile Senate race of the cycle.
Trump has written about the race of Oz praising him but also distancing himself from him.
Trump wrote: “There is a false story being peddled by third-rate reporter Maggie Hagaman of the Failing New York Times that I blame our wonderful former First Lady Melania and Sean Hannity for being mad at me at Dr. Oz. First off, Oz is a great guy who worked very hard and was a very good candidate, but he WAS IN THE RACE LONG before I ever endorsed him, they had NOTHING to do with it, he was not a denier not.” (his fault). ! ), & I wasn’t ANGRY at all. fake news!”
If Trump makes an announcement next week, he will compete not only with all the attention being given to DeSantis, but also with scheduled interviews with his former Vice President Mike Pence, who is releasing his memoirs ahead of a possible presidential bid with ABC News host David Muir and a town hall on CNN. On Thursday, The Journal published an excerpt from the book in which Pence confirmed that Trump said he would be a “sucker” if he did not step in to block the Jan. 6, 2021, electoral vote. “You’re too honest,” Trump complained in a heated exchange with Pence when the then-president urged him to take such action.
The big caveat to the idea that media figures on the right would dump Trump in favor of another figure is that it’s a bit of déjà vu.
As Rolling Stone editor-in-chief Noah Schachtman noted, Trump has been written off many times, even by Murdoch-owned media.
