The BBC has appointed an independent security expert to help investigate what emerged of DJ Tim Westwood’s disgraceful behavior while working at the station.
Jahnine Davis, a youth protection expert, will work with Linklaters’ Gemma White QC to help with the assessment. White noted that Davis will be available to participate in conversations and meetings as she compiles the comprehensive document.
A joint Guardian newspaper-BBC investigation into Westwood’s conduct during his 20 years at the BBC last year found that several women, all then teenagers or young adults, accused him of sexual misconduct and predatory behaviour. Westwood denies the allegations, which also appeared in the BBC documentary Tim Westwood: Abuse of Power.
White will report any allegations or concerns regarding Westwood’s misconduct to the BBC Board and the reasons why such allegations were not brought to the BBC’s attention. BBC director-general Tim Davie slipped up in April when he said he had no complaints against Westwood during his time there. A few weeks later, the company announced that there had actually been six reports of bullying and sexual misconduct against Westwood, one of which had been handed over to the police.
“It is just over a month since the BBC published my Evidence Call for Review and I would like to thank everyone who provided information,” White said today.
“Some of you have told me how difficult it was for you to make the decision to contact me. I understand that talking about sensitive matters can be painful and there are many things to consider before doing so.
“Others who have written or spoken to me have wondered if the information they have to contribute is relevant or important enough – and my answer to that is simply yes. I am and always will be happy to hear from anyone who has something to say to me. I think it’s important that I hear from anyone who wants to talk and that’s why I decided to extend the contact time.”
The BBC previously said it was also in contact with the Metropolitan Police and any relevant information would be passed on to the police. In August, police confirmed they were investigating allegations of sex crimes against the former DJ.
