On the networks, appearing sad is fashionable and becoming worrying

Red nose, watery eyes, bitten mouth… A strange trend has recently emerged on social networks. It consists in reproducing, in a glamorous version, the face you have when you have just cried. Doubtful? Oh barely …

3 million views. Here is the audience of the tutorial published by the beauty influencer Zoe Kim Kenealy in which we see her making a tearful restyling just before Halloween. The target. the goal? Reproduce the tearful look you get after a bout of crying … And if this sequence could be shot to give some ideas of beauty for the October 31st celebration, unfortunately it went viral … And trendy. From now on the hashtag “crying trick” peaks at over 130 million views only on TikTok.

The “crying makeup” tutorial.

“This is for all unstable girls. Do you see how beautiful we are when we cry? However, if you don’t feel like crying, here’s how to get this look with makeup. “

Here’s how Zoe Kim Kenaly presents her video. She immediately starts applying a gradient colored lipstick. To give a less precise effect, she blurs the lip contour with a brush and applies a lip liner. Then, she switches to the eyes by applying a pinkish blush on the upper and lower eyelids, cheekbones and tip of the nose. She uses a shimmering gel that she applies to the height of the lower lashes, to the height of the mobile eyelid as well as to the cupid’s bow to give a tearing effect. Finish by curling the lashes and layering a touch of gloss over the lipstick and the look is complete.

Why is this problematic?

If some celebrities like Bella Hadid recently shared photos of themselves crying on social networks for free speech on mental health, captivating a state of sadness and making it trendy can be questionable. By magnifying the daily suffering experienced by as many as one in five people (in France alone), does this trend not minimize these moments of weakness?
